Item the first. I attended my first Heritage League of Pierce County board meeting today, having been elected to the august position of board member at the annual meeting earlier this month. I narrowly escaped being elected to the office of secretary. I will happily take on such positions at some point -- but not till the next officer election, thanks. Let me figure out what the heck's going on here first. I've never been on a nonprofit board before, and I have never taken minutes (or even read more than a set or two) before. I am now the board's official liaison with our webmaster, though [g].

Item the second. The power cord to my netbook died this morning. The netbook itself is fine and dandy (if running a bit low on juice just now), but the cord is apparently toast. Fortunately, it is possible to buy a replacement cord. Unfortunately, I had to purchase it online, so it'll be a few days before I get it, but fortunately I can write on the desktop till then. It's not optimal, but it's workable. Unfortunately, the replacement cord cost a bit more than I expected. But that's a much better problem than not being able to replace it at all.

Item the third. I just made the best beef stew I've ever had. Unfortunately, I did it by winging it. I hope I can duplicate it the next time I want beef stew...

With a side of feeling better, if not completely well.

Napped soundly for three hours in the wing chair yesterday afternoon, and you have to understand, I just don't nap. Period. Slept through the night except for waking up around three a.m. boiling hot (no, not a hot flash -- hot flash=campfire, last night=something on the order of a nuclear bomb -- I did not get up and find the thermometer, mostly because I was afraid of what it would tell me [wry g]). Went right back to sleep, though. Woke up this morning with a sinus issue (the er, evidence is very much against it being an actual infection), but otherwise feeling much better. Low grade headache and, er, evidence (the down-the-throat part causing a very slight occasional cough) the only things that are bothering me now. I'm not wiped out anymore, either, which was the most worrisome part from my point of view. The last time I was that tired was the day I had my gall bladder out.

I have no idea what this is or was or has been.

But at least I felt well enough to go conduct what darned well better be the last interview for this exhibit, and to see a quilt show [g].

You know, it has just occurred to me that the sinus thing (but not the rest of it) may have to do with the two flowering bulb pots I brought in the house earlier this week. I put them both out on the back patio just now. If there's an improvement, I shall be appropriately embarrassed. However, I've had both daffodils and reticulata irises in the house before without a problem. If they're an addition to the growing list of growing things I can't have in the house, I'm going to be sad.

ugh

I don't know what this is, but I do not like it, Sam I am.

Achy all over, skin overly sensitive, cold all the time (but not running a fever, I checked), and it hurts a little on the left side of my waist when I draw a deep breath. Headache, and gas, too. Oh, and zausted. Insomnia night before last, way too many hours in bed last night (most of which were spent sleeping, thank goodness, although I woke up at least three times), an hour's nap in the wing chair after I finally got up this morning, and I'm still tired. Not flu. I know what flu feels like and this ain't it.

But it sucks eggs, and if it keeps up I suspect there's a doctor's visit in my near future, whether I like it or not.

A fellow named Brian Moffit, who lives somewhere where the blizzard hit in New England, aimed a video projector out at the snow and recorded the results. This is just lovely.

Snurched from komotv.com's weatherman.

Up over 60,000 words as of today, if you count the old Chapters 12-15 that I cut but that I might still end up using parts of (hey, a girl can dream, right?).

Been averaging about 800 a day since the last time I posted, except for over the weekend. Over 1000 today! Yay!

1) Have a waterfall: http://mmjustus.wordpress.com Or at least what I think are some nice photos of Snoqualmie Falls, even if some of them are a bit truncated. The falls, for those not familiar with western Washington, are in the foothills of the Cascades less than an hour from Seattle, not far off of I-90, and are 268 feet tall according to Wikipedia.

2) Yesterday I wrote over 600 words, but cut about 675, so my net word count was in the red, alas.

3) Today I wrote over 900 words. And cut about 15,000 (yes, that's three zeros, not a typo), because where I went wrong was in the middle of Chapter 11, and I didn't figure out that I'd gone wrong let alone where until the middle of Chapter 15, when I came to a complete and grinding halt for three expletive-deleted weeks [sigh]. We're not going to discuss how far in the red that is. On the bright side, I think I've got things fixed, and now I'm writing all new material again. And who knows? Maybe I'll be able to put some of those words back in the book. Judging from past experience in such situations it's not bloody likely, though.

Someday I'm going to finish this book...

Item the first. Over 600 words today.

Item the second. They were all backfill and retconning.

Item the third. My word count is all %$#@*& up because I'm going to end up redoing most of the last four chapters.

Item the fourth. So much for the word count widget.

But at least I'm writing again. And I think I know where I went astray and how to get back on path.

That was a helluva January. And not in a good way.

forgive me

For I am slightly buzzed.

But would someone please like to explain to me why I had no trouble whatsoever shelling out three grand for my museum studies certification four years ago (which I do not regret doing for one moment, mind you) but can't talk myself into spending $300 apiece for a couple of classes on self-publishing (how to design covers, write teaser copy, design the interior of a paper book, etc.) that I suspect would help my writing income rather a lot?

When I posted the picture of the new quilt top, [livejournal.com profile] thnidu made a comment to the effect that he thought it was a quilt I was going to imitate and was amazed that I was something I'd actually made myself. At which point I was going to send him to my Flickr account, where I had a bunch of pictures of my quilts posted. The operative word being "had." Somehow they no longer exist there, and I have no idea why (no, I hadn't gone over the 200 picture limit of a free account, and the descriptions are there but the photos aren't). So I decided to put up a page on my own website of all the quilts I've made that I have photos of (somewhere just north of about half my total output over the last 25 years). And here it is, if you're interested in taking a gander -- http://mmjustus.com/imagepage.html. Beware, it's a rather huge page with a lot of photos!

I spent way too much money on frames and mats this week (even with readymade both and doing my own framing work, it was darned close to $200 when all was said and done), but the six cross-stitched critters I stitched last summer are up on my living room walls, and the lighthouses which were there (and have been, in eight different living rooms since 1987) before, are down and stowed away in the closet.

Four more critters to go, I think.

Anyway, here they are!

Can someone, off the top of their head, tell me the html code where you can click on a link and it will jump you down to a particular point on a webpage instead of taking you to a completely different page? I have a how-to book, but I can't figure out what to look that up under.

Thanks!

Oh, and my website has been updated, and here's the first chapter of Finding Home, the third book in my Yellowstone series.

Sigh. Between what has just been pointed out as my annual SAD (why can't I see this happening to me for myself?) and the second longest January dry spell in recorded history in western Washington (complete with varying burn bans, stagnant air advisories, and all the cold, dank fog and murk your little heart could desire), which just ended yesterday with a good cleansing rain, thank all the gods, and the uncertainty of jury duty, which just ended today without me getting picked for a jury, the writing has ground utterly to a halt.

So this is what I've been doing instead, a second attempt (after the catastrophe that was the Yule Log Cabin quilt) at a Christmas-themed quilt for my bed:

whole quilt.jpg

Just the top. I've been quilting on the flame quilt, which will probably take me to spring to finish, and have several other smaller projects for over the summer, so I probably won't actually quilt this till next fall. Hopefully I will get it quilted and bound in time to put it on my bed in December.

Anyway, here's a side view:

side view 2.jpg

The inner narrow red border does not look nearly so pink in real life, and the white dots are snowflakes.

And a closeup of a couple of the stars and the borders:

close-up.jpg

Six whites/silver fabrics for the stars, about twenty reds, and about thirty greens, all from my stash except for a couple of the whites/silvers. The borders are all new fabric (I don't buy fabric in the yardage needed for borders for my stash unless I absolutely fall in love with one to the point of ridiculousness, which has happened maybe half a dozen times in twenty-odd years).

So. Piecing time is good thinking time, and I did at least partly figure out why James has clammed up. I suspect it's because this is at least in part a mystery story, and, well, I've never written a mystery before. So I went to the library yesterday and put a bunch of how to write a mystery books on hold. Hey, that's what I did when I was learning how to write romance...

Gacked from [personal profile] beatrice_otter:

I know very little about some of the people on my friends list. Some people I know relatively well. But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's Parker ...she likes money and cereal." I'd love it if everyone who's friended me did this. (Yes, even you people who I know really well.) Then post this in your own journal [only if you feel inclined]. In return, ask me anything you'd like to know about me and I'll give you an answer*.

*Providing it's answerable/suitable for public posting.

And here's what I said on her journal:

I write historical fiction (with a bit of the fantastic, in the old sense of the term) set in the North American West. I quilt, and cross-stitch, and crochet, all of which combine to keep me from being destructive while trying to sit still (my mother taught me to crochet when I was very young because it was either that or find little piles of shredded paper in front of the TV in the mornings).

The higher the altitude, the warmer it got -- 34F (1C) foggy degrees at home, and 64F (almost 18dC) gloriously sunny degrees at 5400 feet on Mt. Rainier.

Doing my duty as a good citizen if jury duty didn't consist of being treated like cattle and like the time (and some other things, for that matter) of those in the jury pool is completely valueless.

Just because they know we're a captive audience and there are hundreds of us at a time does not make it right.
