a DW question

When people do quotations from other sources in DW, the words show up in a black block with white writing. If I look at this black box long enough to read the writing, when I look away again, I get an afterimage that lasts approximately as long as it took to read the quotation. For long quotations, this is really annoying.

Is there a way to keep DW from putting quotations in white letters on a black background?

Huh. It does not do that for me, but I'm using <blockquote> when I do quotations, nothing special. I view other journals in style=mine, which simplifies the usual viewing problems.

ETA: Also, you may have to interrogate your CSS.

EFTA: Definitely the CSS. You probably have to make the background transparent and the print dark. Sounds like a job for dw_styles.

icons too

how about icons? mine and everyone else's show up on black background, which can ruin them. See this one. It's supposed to look like this:
and does on the icon page and in the icon browse menu.

The default background color for icons is black.

You can probably change that in CSS. When I subscribe/grant access, I assign a background and foreground color. For non-subscription reading, it seems to be the same as the Entry\Comment subject border and background, which is under Customize Style>Colors.

Dsiclaimer: I know no CSS, and I worked out my customization by trial and error, which is why I never submitted it as a style.

Not as far as I can tell. Customize Journal Style has 3 mentions of "borders", none of which helped me.

But I went to look at this discussion again, and happened to do it by pasting the URL of mmegaera's post into the browser's address bar instead of going via my friends page. And I immediately noticed that the user icons of her posts are bordered in the same green as the page header.

So I changed my Page header background color to a light gray, #cccccc. That made the icons look MUCH better, but the page title, in white, was almost unreadable. So I changed Page title color to black, #000000, and I am much happier with my page's appearance now. PROBLEM SOLVED.

And what do I do with dw_styles? Post my problem?

Would just changing my style work? To which one? I really like this one except for the quote thing.

All you have to do is
1. copy jana's code fragment
2. paste it into the big blank panel on Customize Journal Style
3. click "save changes" at the bottom of your pane
4. refresh your view of your journal.

It may be your style (some styles have color backgrounds for blockquotes). What I saw of the style you're using indicates good use of color and clean lines--I like it--but I don't know which one it is.

People post style problems in style_system--I meant style_system, pardon my mistake, and other people come up with solutions.

I have finally bought HTML and CSS for Dummies so I can get a handle on this stuff. (Hmmmm. I wonder if background color is an attribute in blockquote and can be input directly...?)

I'll be honest. I'm more inclined to just skip the quotes rather than go to all the hassle of trying to fix the problem. If it was a quick fix (click a button), I'd do it, but I'm not going to deal with posting on a board and waiting for a solution that will probably be more than I want to deal with. Or changing my style.

What I'm saying is that if there's a quick fix, I want it. If there isn't, then DW needs to create one, and if they haven't, they've screwed up.

No harm, no foul! (I wouldn't mind a very pale tint behind blockquotes, but I don't know how to do that. Not to mention a blockquote button...)

The black quote background is part of your style and you can easily re-style it by copying & pasting the code below into the custom css area, where it says 'Use embedded CSS':


blockquote {
background: white;
color: black;
border: 1px solid #20c4db;
border-left: 15px solid #20c4db;
margin: 15px 15px 15px 50px;
padding: 10px;
width: 65%;
}

Hit 'Save Changes' and you shouldn't see any black quotes anymore.

I don't know much about CSS or style sheets or anything like that. However, this is a completely different way of handling your problem. If you need to temporarily put a page into black and white, or get rid of annoying things about a website, there are bookmarklets available.

I mostly use the general zap one, but some of the other bookmarklets look pretty useful as well. You get rid of the changes by refreshing your page.
