That sounds like a nice outing. The "woolly bear" appears to be a Spotted Tussock Moth caterpillar. The bird is probably a Fox Sparrow.

I'm glad to hear that you're making arrangements for your books. I've enjoyed them.

I happened to recognize the caterpillar as one I've seen before, so looking it up was pretty easy. I have a very nice guide to the caterpillars of eastern North America, which is helpful here, but less so where you are.
