1. In your opinion, what is the best translation of a book to a movie?
Anne of Green Gables (not the sequels, however). LotR. HP4 (considering that it's my least favorite of the books and most favorite of the movies so far, that's quite a feat -- the others aren't bad, either, except for #5, which really only suffers in comparison to the others). Branagh's Hamlet (do plays count?). Note, best can but does not have to mean most faithful. Sometimes being faithful to the book can result in disaster (Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, anyone? -- Kenneth Branagh is my favorite actor, but even I have my limits). With that in mind, add The Princess Bride.
2. The worst?
The aforementioned MS's F. The rest of the examples I can think of off the top of my head are television shows, and Little House on the Prairie tops the list. What a travesty.
3. Had you read the book before seeing the movie, and did that make a difference? (Personally, all other things being equal, I usually prefer whichever I was introduced to first.)
Yes, and yes, and yes. Although I -- yes, the following is heresy, deal with it -- like the LotR movies better than the LotR books, and I did attempt (the word is accurate) the books long before the movies came out. The movies actually made it possible for me to get all the way through the books for the first time. I can say I've done it, and I probably won't be doing it again.
