Success, success! I did it! I did it!

Okay. You can plug your Kindle into the USB port on your desktop computer, go to Amazon.com on the desktop, buy books, and have them delivered directly to your Kindle, sans wifi. I know, because I just did it [g].

And Calibre makes very lovely .mobi (Kindle) files out of just about anything you like, including .rtf files of the Miles books, and .pdfs of books acquired in the past from various and sundry places. Well, except for the DRM'd ones I got from Carina Press a while back. Oh, well [g]. Then you click one button and it sends the files to my Kindle. I know, because I just did that, too [g].

This is so cool I could just about pop, but then I am a) always astonished when new gadgets work just how they're supposed to right out of the box, and b) very easily amused.

My problem is that after so many years of struggling with stuff that doesn't Just Work, I sometimes do things in a way that is unnecessarily difficult.

You might compare the Vorkosiverse books from Calibre vs. the versions direct from Baen - you can grab them easily at http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/24-CryoburnCD/CryoburnCD/ or re-download them direct from Baen.

Wait, where did you buy Carina Press books from that had DRM on them? I always buy Carina books directly from their site, and Carina's never put DRM on themselves. (Other vendors though may do so...)

Yeah, my vote would be some other book in the set if you were doing a mass convert! I'd be interested in knowing which one it was.

Whenever I buy something from Amazon, B&N, the Apple store, or Kobo, I expect some form of DRM to be on the book unless the publisher has specifically made them not put any on there. For example, I've bought Angry Robot books from the Apple store that didn't have DRM on them.

But if I have an option, I'll buy directly from publishers that avoid DRM.
