logjams, etc.
May. 17th, 2006 07:32 pmOkay, we now have another event horizon to write to, and we know how Charley (and Emma) are going to get back to the Park. Unfortunately, it involves doing yet *more* research before we can write it (is that a royal we, you ask? -- no, it's me and Charley, since I am, after all, just taking the dictation).
Gotta learn about what Charley would have been taught while studying forestry at college in 1959, and what about that would have impressed Philetus Norris enough to want to hire him to work in the Park in the summer of 1878. And what he'd want him to do.
Norris was a rather forward-thinking man, and he did spend the previous winter in Washington, D.C. rubbing shoulders with some of the pioneers in the conservation movement while he begged for funds for the Park, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that he'd want Charley's skills. Now I just have to figure out what they would be and what he'd *do* with 'em.
And here I thought I was done with research for this thing. Sigh. But I put out an APB for help, which has been forthcoming, and I've been reserving books right and left, and going through memory.loc.gov's pages on the history of conservation, so I think we're getting somewhere. I'll let you know where when I get there.
In other news, there are *four* kinds of my favorite flower in all the world (iris) blooming by my front door, and the bleeding heart out back has decided to take over the universe, and the clematis I brought with me when I moved two years ago has decided it likes its new quarters, because it's got at least two dozen huge purple blooms on it. OTOH, the rhododendron that came with the condo is the only one within 100 miles in any direction that isn't blooming. Again. I had a nice little talk with it last year when it did this, so I think it's going to have to come out. Gonna have to hire somebody to do it, though. Maybe they can take out the Ugliest Juniper in the U.S. while they're at it, and add a few paving stones to extend my patio. Hmmm...
Oh, and I finished quilting all the trees in the Bears in the Woods quilt. All that's left is four Bear Paw blocks and the border of Flying Geese. I made the first Attic Windows block for the quilt I'm making for my friend Loralee (the one who helped me out so much last winter when I had my shoulder worked on), too. I *adore* the fabric she picked out (http://www.fabricdepot.com/Product.aspx?ItemKey=14239), which is gorgeous but not something I would have been smart enough to pick out myself, and she picked a simple pattern, so this is going to be fun.
