mmegaeraIs there such a thing as a TiVo/DVR that does not have a monthly charge attached to it? One where I just buy the machine, hook it up, and set the times I want to record rather than have it search for particular shows/whatever?
I have bare bones cable. I cannot get a DVR/TiVo through my cable provider unless I upgrade to many more channels. I do not want to do this (it's a money issue, not to mention a timesink issue -- the desire for the DVR is actually a timesink issue, too, come to think of it), nor do I want to switch to a satellite TV provider (I looked into this a couple of years ago -- between my condo rules and the technical requirements, there is no good place to put the dish). I just want to be able to record shows and watch them later while fastforwarding through the commercials, without having to deal with DVD discs or (heaven forbid) videotapes and their much more limited time capability and other issues (I have been using videotapes up till now, but I am about to wear out my last one and more are not to be found for love or money).
Am I out of luck? And if not, where would I buy such a thing? Best Buy and Video Only just sort of stared at me in bewilderment, and I'd rather not buy online unless it's my absolutely last option.
