Last night I posted a comment on the National Parks Traveler blog, to a post talking about the oil boom in North Dakota and how it's affected Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which I visited last June.
This morning I received an email from a reporter from the CBS News morning show, asking me about my experiences while I was there.
First time anything like that has ever happened to me.
And, yes, she was legit. So I told her all about it [g].

writing, etc.
Oct. 15th, 2012 05:17 pmI took the weekend off, but today I wrote 872 words. So that's not bad. Still more than on track to have the manuscript finished by the end of February, which is pretty fast for me. Unless, of course, the book turns out much longer than I think it will be.
I almost had a close encounter with a candidate for the Darwin award on Friday. In addition to the wet stuff falling from the sky, you always know when it's the beginning of the rainy season in western Washington because the news is full of car crashes because all the oils on the road from the dry summer haven't washed off yet. Considering that we hadn't had rain in 81 days when it started raining on Friday, the oils were pretty thick this year. Anyway, I was waiting at a stoplight when some idiot who didn't realize this came careening up behind me at way too fast a speed, slammed on his brakes, and swerved, slid, and squealed to a stop less than two feet behind me. My adrenaline was pumping nicely, so his must have been really squirting through his bloodstream. He stayed a very tame distance behind me at a very tame speed for the next several miles until he turned off the highway, though. Hopefully the lesson will stick.
And today I finally began the research for the new exhibit. Spent the afternoon at the Northwest Room at the Tacoma Public Library turning my fingertips black with old newspaper clippings [g]. Found some interesting stuff, though.
blog touring
Oct. 15th, 2012 10:09 amI'm being interviewed over at Jacquie Rogers' blog Romancing the West, and would love some company.
There's an excerpt there, too.

Oct. 14th, 2012 04:23 pmI used to complain that the Seattle Seahawks were specialists in pulling defeat out of the jaws of victory.
Well, now they seem to have it reversed. At last.
24-23 over the best offense in the National Football League (the New England Patriots) is pretty darned impressive, esp. considering that Russell Wilson is a rookie quarterback. Pulling off the final seven points in the last two minutes of the game was enough to have me scaring the cats, though...
I think the announcers are finally beginning to quit going on (and on, and on) about Wilson's height, too. Yeah, he's a little short for a quarterback (5'11"), but that just means he can (and does) duck through places a bigger guy can't [g].

writerly stuff
Oct. 10th, 2012 03:47 pmFirst. Thank you so much
archangelbeth. Now I can be obsessive about my author ranking, too [wry g].
Right now I'm at #4188 for historical fiction ebooks. On September 29th, I was #2007. Too bad I can't debut a new book every week...
However, for adventure ebooks, I'm at #1494, which is surprisingly good (or maybe that's just not a much-used category), and for romance ebooks, with no surprise whatsoever (actually I'm surprised the number's that low), I'm at #5155.
Nope, this is not a good obsession.
And today's Finding Home word count: 742.

Over 10,000 words! Yay!

three things make a post
Oct. 8th, 2012 04:14 pm1) Six pounds. Ivan and Teddy now officially each weigh six pounds (Teddy's about six and a quarter). They don't look like kittens anymore. This doesn't keep them from acting like kittens, though, thank goodness.
2) I'm still blogging away on the Alaska trip at http://mmjustus.wordpress.com. Up to day 29 (we were gone 42 days, or six weeks), having caught salmon on the Kenai Peninsula and explored Anchorage, and now we're slowly and indirectly wending our way to Haines, and the ferry.
3) After not writing for the last three days, I had a very good day at the keyboard today.
Friday I took a friend up to Carbon River and the not-a-rainforest-this-time-of-year:

Saturday I was so lethargic I couldn't keep my eyes open, and Sunday, well, I had to watch the Seahawks win by the skin of their teeth, which is no excuse, I know...
Anyway, I had another 1000+ word day today. 1017, to be precise:

you know that feeling
Oct. 6th, 2012 05:25 pmWhen you're not really sick enough to go to the doctor, you just don't feel good?
Ran a fever Monday night of over 100, was gone by morning, hasn't recurred.
Random mild stomach and bowel upsets off and on all week.
A runny nose on Wednesday, which hasn't recurred.
And I fell asleep for over an hour. In the wing chair. This afternoon. In the middle of the day. I don't do that. And I'm still feeling lethargic. It's not like I haven't been getting enough sleep at night this week, either.
Whatever this is, I just wish it would go away.

Today's count
Oct. 3rd, 2012 06:46 pm1038 words. Which is a very good day for me indeed.
7551 in total so far. If I was writing another book of True Gold's length, I'd be about 8% done. This one is going to be somewhat longer, I think. More like Repeating History's length, probably. Which means I have about 6% of a book. At least that's what the meter says. Snort. All predictions along this line are subject to change without notice.
I like James. I like him a lot. He reacts so entertainingly when I throw things at him. And he's been exceedingly patient for the last ten years for someone who is now doing a convincing imitation of a verbal fire hose.
As for the requested excerpts, I suspect I'd end up spoiling the book for someone (I left the last one at something of a cliffhanger), so, reluctantly, I'm going to have to decline.

Oct. 2nd, 2012 01:46 pmI need some.
So I am going to start posting stats on the progress of Finding Home, the third book in my Yellowstone trilogy.
As of today, I have 6513 total words, of which 692 were written today.
Well into Chapter 2. I ended up combining the old Chapters 1 and 2 into a new, longer Chapter 1. Which works much better.
These things aren't set in concrete, after all, until I hit the upload buttons at Amazon and Smashwords [g].
Any cheerleading is more than welcome.

the boys at four months
Oct. 2nd, 2012 01:29 pmI haven't posted a photo of Ivan and Teddy for three weeks. In that time they've both hit five pounds, so they've grown a lot.
So here for your viewing pleasure, Ivan and Teddy!

A sleepy Teddy on my lap.

The older Teddy gets, the more the ticking is creeping up his back. He looks positively tweed, doesn't he?

Ivan's got a very strange look on his face in this one, like he's eyeing me for some sort of mob crime. I love how his fur gleams, though. It's just gorgeous.
And the obligatory wrestling shots:

The first one's better quality, but I like the second one better.

Sep. 27th, 2012 10:09 pmThe most gorgeous video I've seen in a long time is a five-minute piece taken of the northern lights at Denali National Park.
I've embedded it at my blog: http://mmjustus.wordpress.com

I hate technology
Sep. 27th, 2012 05:10 pmSo. In the last week or so:
1) The LJ kafoffle (solved, thanks to
sraun).
2) My (practically brand new) cell phone died again. To quote Mick Jagger, I got no satisfaction, so I gave Net10 the heave-ho (with great difficulty, and I'm going to be watching my VISA bill like a hawk) and now have another phone (and number) with the help of a very good local friend.
3) Wordpress.com suddenly quit working today with the version of IE I can't upgrade from until
kk1raven finishes (she's working as fast as she can -- this is most decidedly not complaining about her because I'm just grateful to be able to barter her services for some quilted placemats) figuring out how to make Thunderbird do what I need it to do.
4) I downloaded Firefox so I can keep posting to my Wordpress blog. It works abysmally slowly, and I can't figure out how to make the default font readable (size and typeface), but at least I can post to Wordpress with it, and keep using IE for everything else.
I think that's it for now. [crosses fingers]
No, it isn't. Something's wrong with the LJ/DW crosspost thing. So I'm manually crossposting. Sigh.
Oh, and I'm up to Chapter 3 in the New Thing, and up to Anchorage in the Megaera's Adventures in Alaska When I was Fourteen blog post series.

I'm not arguin', 'kay?
Sep. 25th, 2012 07:04 pmBut, all opinions about the decision aside (all comments complaining about it will be deleted), I just want to say one thing about last night's football game.
Welcome to our world, Packers. And don't anyone dare mention the fact that Aaron Rodgers got sacked eight times in the first half alone.
Signed, a fan of the Seattle Seahawks, aka the Rodney Dangerfields of football, with not-so-fond-but-exceedingly-vivid memories of the 2005-6 season's Super Bowl.

Something I will *never* get used to
Sep. 21st, 2012 05:03 pmTotal strangers contacting me to tell me how much they enjoyed my books and to ask me when the next one is coming and where they can go to find out when it is (next spring, I hope -- so far all I have written is one chapter, but I'm working on it -- and my blog: http://mmjustus.wordpress.com, respectively).
Never in a gazillion years.
