Was a strong influence on me as an adolescent, but not for the Wrinkle in Time/Wind in the Door/etc., series. AAMOF, somehow I managed to get through my childhood and adolescence without reading more than the first book in that series at about age eight (and was most impressed by the big, blind, furry creatures that healed Meg and co. after their first round of Camazotz (sp?), for some reason).

The reason she had such an influence on me was a less-well-known book called The Moon By Night, about an adolescent Vicky Austin and her family's cross-country camping trip. No science fiction or fantasy, just a family story about doing the kinds of things that I, who spent a great deal of time in my childhood summers in the back seat of a car, could identify with. The trip was a metaphor for growing up, but it was also an adventure. And I remember the adults who spent time with Vicky, and listened to her when she had serious things to say both good and bad, and I remember thinking what a wonderful thing that would be.

You are missed, Madeleine L'Engle. I didn't always agree with your worldview, but I did so like the way of living you wrote about.
