Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Jul. 11th, 2007 08:18 pmDoes this need a spoiler cut? I suppose it probably does.
I saw it today. I have only read the book once, and that some time ago when it first came out, so I didn't have details to miss (except that I was really hoping for that Kenneth Branagh cameo in St. Mungo's [g]).
Was the new scriptwriter noticeable to anyone but me? I got the very strong impression that he was a bit intimidated by his subject material. And that the script was the weak link this time. Goblet of Fire is still my favorite of the movies (and my least favorite of the books -- go figure), but this one was just fine. I still think the producers need to make Mike Newell An Offer He Can't Refuse to direct the last two movies, though.
Except for not being able to look at the screen every time Umbridge was on it (I knew that was going to be a problem going in -- she is my alltime least favorite character in the series, because self-righteous bullies are just disgusting). I was so desperately hoping that one of the things they would cut was the bit about the lines cutting into Harry's hand. That was beyond creepy in the book, let alone the movie. I did rather like it when she met Grawp, though. Although Grawp looked a little too much like Alfred E. Neumann for me to keep my face straight when he was on screen.
It was nice to see the kids again, as always. And I did like the battle in the ministry scenes (although "George and Fred get themselves expelled" was much more fun). But there were too many bits thrown into this one that were there just because they were in the book. The kiss seemed totally unrelated to the rest of the movie, for instance, and we never did see Harry and Cho break up, although I did like the bit in the ministry where Harry and Ginny made eye contact. Nice foreshadowing, that was.
Anyway, it was a great way to get out of the almost 100-degree heat we had today (we came within four degrees of breaking the alltime high temperature record for SeaTac Airport today). And I probably will see it one more time on the big screen in a week or so, just because.
