The Explaining Meme, from [livejournal.com profile] joyeuse, although [livejournal.com profile] filkferengi was the one who actually picked the ones for me to explain. She picked three icons and three interests for me to explain. Comment and I'll pick three of each for you.

Now, I know [livejournal.com profile] filkferengi already has a fairly good idea about these icons, but here goes about the explanations, anyway.

Icons:

Father Frost.jpg
Father Frost

He's got kind of a double meaning. Maybe triple. 1) I love to cross-stitch, especially when I'm stressed out. Lately I've been doing a series of Santas, of which Father Frost is one, because 2) I love Santas -- Santa is a shaman, you know -- he can travel magically, bewitch animals to do his bidding, and he's fat. All good shamans are fat because their people feed them well. And 3), well, okay, he's a Barrayaran Santa, which is why he's my favorite, and why I picked this one rather than the other two (there are three more to go) to use for the icon. I tend to use this one when I'm amused at something.

Quilt.jpg

Another favorite hobby is quilting. I just finished this one, from an Eleanor Burns pattern, less than a year ago. The blocks are 6" across, which means those little bitty half-square triangles in the bear paws in the corners are 1" across. If I'm ever insane enough to work with pieces that small again, somebody please shoot me. I chose that pattern because with the evergreen trees and so forth, it's vaguely Pacific Northwestern in ambiance. The color scheme furthers the connection. It currently hangs in my bedroom. It's my icon for when I'm feeling creative.

grand geyser.jpg
geyser

*Grand* Geyser, if you please, which is located in the Upper Geyser Basin, about a half mile from Old Faithful, in Yellowstone National Park. This is the geyser which, while I sat watching it for the first time (when your first eruption of Grand Geyser is a five-burst, you're a very fortunate person, and I was), inspired me to think, wow, what a great time travel device. And further inspired a 700-page novel out of me, which apparently is the first of a trilogy, if I can ever get past the third version of Chapter 1 (the first book had at least three prologues and four Chapter 1s before I managed to get it right and move on, so this is not abnormal for me) of the second volume. Anyway, I use it as an icon any time I'm really excited about something.

Interests:

meteorology [?]
I am the woman of a gazillion hobbies, which is one reason I call myself a professional dilettante. I've been fascinated by weather and climate since I was a little girl, and it was only slightly dampened about 20 years ago in Colorado when I was standing outside of the post office in Fort Collins and a lightning strike went off directly over my head -- close enough that I heard it before I saw it.

Celtic music [kind of vague, ne?]
Yeah. And your point is? [g] I do tend to like my Celtic music with modern pop overtones (Great Big Sea is a favorite), and I like my traditional Celtic music with lots of fiddle and not much voice, but in general I just like it. Period.

Paranormal fiction
See above about the geyser explanation for the personal interest in paranormal fiction. I like ghoulies and ghosties and things that go bump in the night (but no vampires, thankyouverymuch). I've had a couple of personal experiences with ghosts, which makes the fictional variety just the much more piquant. And there's just too much out there with no explanation to make me believe that such things don't really exist.
