Lois's signing tonight at the University Bookstore in Seattle

Just in case someone on my FL doesn't want to know about Lois's New Thing (which I can't imagine, but still).

"Ivan -- His Book"

Which is the working title Lois says she's given his file on her computer [g].

Oh, dear. Okay. I'm not sure where to start. Perhaps with the fact that I snickered so hard all the way home tonight it's amazing I didn't get a nosebleed. Just hearing her read Byerly Vorrutyer out loud was worth the price of admission. Grover Gardner is going to have a field day voicing all that snark. Oh, and her idea didn't actually start with Ivan. Or By. You see, there's this girl... Ahem. Excuse me.

Anyway, the scene we got tonight opens with Ivan's first night on Komarr (there's a reference to the events of DI having been about a year previously), all jump-lagged in what amounts to the Solstice Marriott on a junket for work, when the door chimes, and it's Byerly. Ivan's all what the heck are you doing here, and By says working, which sets all Ivan's hackles off. Then By says, I need a favor, which only makes things worse, then he hands over this photo (well, Lois called it something all SFnal, but it was a photo) of this, let's see, how did Ivan describe her? Lots of curly black hair, cinnamon skin against a cream-colored tank top, pillowy bosoms and long legs. Only he went into a lot more detail (about halfway home I had this terrible foreboding that she's Cetagandan, which, if Ivan does end up falling in love with her is going to give Lady Alys -- not to mention ImpSec -- a heart attack). Anyway, she's apparently a Suspicious Character, and By wants Ivan to cozy up to her and find out who she is. Tomorrow.

There was also a snide remark from Ivan in there somewhere about taking Byerly up on one of his questionable proposals, which set the entire room off.

Let's see. No, I couldn't figure out how to ask Lois why she structured CryoBurn the way she did, so I didn't (not going to get into a discussion of the structure of CryoBurn here, okay?). Instead I asked "why Ivan now?" and she said, well, it started with this woman, and she needed Ivan for her story. Lots of "how do you write?" questions, and someone asked if there was going to be more Sharing Knife, which must have been a refreshing change from Lois's point of view (it's not in the queue at the moment), and someone else asked about Chalion, and it sounds like she might be getting fairly close to critical mass on the Father or the Mother's book. And she said something that sort of hit a light bulb for me about plot vs. setting vs. character. Seems like every time I listen to her she says something useful along those lines.

Anyway, I had a wonderful time tonight (and ate some very nice roast lamb beforehand, too).
