It's been almost a month. Boy, that wasn't intentional.

Reached the end of (as opposed to finished) Chapter 27 Thursday night. Started Chapter 28 yesterday morning. I'm kind of at a point in the story where a) I can see the ending, and b) it's one of those places where "I did this, and then I did that" (it's in first person) is really really easy to do. But not very readable. So there's lots to do still on Chapter 27. But it needs to cook a bit first.

Found out I'm going to be a great-aunt (yeah, yeah, great in other ways, too) twice more this fall. My nephew's wife (the one who got married two years ago, not the one who got married this spring) is due in October with her first. We don't know whether the baby will be a boy or a girl because the parents don't want to know ahead of time (which is kind of nifty in some ways). My niece (that nephew's sister, not the other one) is due in November with a boy. So my oldest sister, as my mother put it, will be grandmothering all over the place. The baby quilts are in process -- I pieced a Warm Wishes quilt (http://members.tripod.com/~FVQG/pq/tn_prw0506.jpg) with the focus fabric a yard I picked up a couple of years ago particularly for this contingency that has all kinds of cool little animals on it doing improbable things, like an iguana eating an ice cream cone, and a hippo in a dress covered in red roses, and that sort of thing. It's cute. The second quilt is about half pieced. I decided that I wasn't going to buy any new fabric for either of these quilts, then I realized I didn't have anything that screamed "boy baby" in my stash. So I got out my dyepots on Sunday (first time since I moved two years ago!) and did a run of pale to dark turquoisy blue (Dharma's cerulean) and a run of pale to dark yellow (Dharma's golden yellow, which borders on school bus yellow if you go *too* dark). Then I cut out squares for a Trip Around the World quilt (kind of like this, except that the one I'm making is square with no borders -- http://www.quiltingconnect.com/trip_around_world.jpg). I hope to have them both done by the end of August, and then I will get back to the crane quilt and finish it by Christmas.

It's so *wonderful* to be able to quilt all I want again, and not have my shoulder give out just as I get good started.

What else? Oh, I think I finally managed to derail the Patron From Hell who kept hitting on me and wouldn't take No for an answer. I hope so, anyway.

Oh, and I'm going to a lavender festival tomorrow! With a quilt show attached [g]. And then spending the night and making my annual Hurricane Ridge pilgrimage to see wildflowers the following day.

And so much for July being a breather after almost 120 hours at the library in June. 101 hours in July as of yesterday. I'm getting better at saying no, but when they say things like, "we can't find anyone else," and do Puss-in-boots eyes at me...

The money's good, anyway. Sigh. It's too bad the time is more valuable to me these days.

Oh, and lest we forget:

Due to the extreme kindness of those I work with, I am now the proud possessor of an ARC of the newest Lois McMaster Bujold -- The Sharing Knife, Vol. 1: Beguilement.

Which I inhaled Thursday night.

I like it. I don't adore it, like I have others of her books. It's closer to a conventional fantasy romance than anything else Bujold has written, IMHO, and I have some seriously weird sneaking suspicions about where this is leading that I don't know whether I want to come true or not. The world is interesting. I wasn't all that excited about the plot. The main characters are both classic Bujold and classic romance H/H at the same time, which for some reason completely discombobulated me. Lois has done lots of romance, but never had such a "classic" romance hero or heroine before. I wish I knew how to explain that better, but I don't.

But if I didn't know there was another half yet to come I think I might be disappointed.
