Sigh. Okay. I walked into Best Buy this afternoon ready to spend about $400. I walked out empty-handed because 1) they claimed not to have any MP3 CD players anymore -- yeah, I'm using the term claimed deliberately because I refuse to believe the technology is that outmoded that quickly -- call me a Luddite if you like but it won't make either of us feel any better, and 2) they weren't willing to give me the combination price on the netbook/DVD drive I'd been looking at last week, even though I'd been told last week that it was the regular combination price and wouldn't change for at least a month.

So I walked out, and they lost the sale(s). I guess this unimpressive middle-aged lady in a sweatshirt was just too small potatoes for them. Not the first time that's happened.

So. Now I have another problem. I have a bunch of MP3 CDs with audiobooks on them. I was using a portable MP3 CD player hooked up to a pair of computer speakers to play them, but it died today, in the middle of a book, dammit. I can play them in my car (I have an MP3 CD-capable stereo in my four-year-old car), or I can transfer the files onto my computer and play them that way, but that's pretty limiting (I can't take them upstairs to my sewing room, mainly). Anyone have a good recommendation for an inexpensive, sturdy MP3 player brand/model that I can plug that spare set of computer speakers into? I hate headphones/earbuds with a purple passion.

Thanks!
