I belong to a mailing list for fabric dyers. This afternoon, one of them posted a neat little story about how her husband, who was part of a breast cancer fundraiser which required him to wear pink, asked her at eleven the night before if she could dye something for him to wear. She then told all about how she fished out her dyepots and her dyes and stayed up till all hours and got up at 5 am to rinse them out and so forth and so on.

Then someone else posted and said, good for you and all, but wouldn't it have been easier just to throw it in the wash with a red sock?
