When you go off and leave your garden for two and a half weeks in August [wry g].

Fortunately, the back garden is watered by automatic sprinkler (the condo development wants green grass and live shrubs). But a great many things are draped gracefully (or less so) through and over other things, and boy, do I need to get out there and deadhead in the worst way.

This is scabiosa, aka pincushion flower, which is a new annual for me this year. I kind of like it, even if it didn't start blooming till after I left on my trip (to give it its credit, that may have had more to do with our summer that didn't get going weatherwise till the middle of July).

Some of the plants in the pots and tubs in back, which did not get any supplemental water while I was gone (and we had no rain to speak of, which is usual here for August), survived, and some did not. I lost the pineapple sage I'd been babying in the house all winter for the last two winters, and, believe it or not, one of the mints died. I didn't know that was possible [g]. Both are replaceable next spring, so no big deal.

Thanks to my neighbor, the tubs out front did get watered while I was gone, and the salpiglossis is still going strong. Not impressed with the monkey flowers in the little pots, though. I need to experiment further with plants that could do well there.

This is what happens when a garden bed that is not watered by automatic sprinkler gets no supplemental water for two and a half weeks in August. First thing I did when I got home was hook up the soaker hose and run it for several hours, though, and it doesn't look like I lost anything, not even the annuals. Boy, do I need to deadhead...

I've been very remiss about posting garden porn this year. Too much else going on in life, I guess.

I'm going to the humane society tomorrow!

Wish me luck in finding two new housemates...
