Well, that was annoying.

I was given a slide scanner for my birthday. Today I finally got around to loading the software and driver, and hooking it up.

Turns out my desktop computer's USB ports are 1.0s and the scanner requires a 2.0. This is fixable for a reasonable price from my computer guy, but it means hauling the box down to his shop on Friday. Which I will do, but it did bring the process to a grinding halt for today.

So I tried uploading the software and driver to my netbook via my external DVD drive. That went fine (except that the netbook screen proportions hid at least one of the buttons I needed to click on in order to do the installation without giving me a scroll thingy on the side -- I did eventually manage to maneuver well enough to click it, but it wasn't fun and I'm not sure I could duplicate the process since I'm not exactly sure how I did it in the first place) until I plugged in the scanner, at which point the netbook rebooted itself and wouldn't recognize the scanner. It did this several times. So I ended up doing a system restore on the netbook, which made it functional again but made the driver and software go away so did not solve the scanner problem.

I would love to be able to use the scanner with the netbook so that when I go down to visit my mother I can work on scanning my dad's slides, but I have no clue how to make it work.

Sigh.
