two strikes and you're what?
Aug. 13th, 2010 07:45 pmI want a good movie about Australia. Not a documentary, but a movie. And not something that makes me cringe in embarrassment for y'all. It must be available through Netflix -- there's no point in taunting me with something that never made it to the US or that I can't get my hands on.
So. A couple of weeks ago, Ned Kelly, with Heath Ledger, no less, in the title role, and Naomi Watts and Orlando Bloom, popped to the top position on my Netflix queue. I suspect it landed in my queue in the first place because of Ledger's death, but hey, I'm always up for a good historical, especially one that isn't set in the US or the UK, mostly because they're rather rare beasts.
I couldn't tell if the acting was any good (although, hey, Heath Ledger, so it probably was), because a) the cinematography looked like they were filming through a dust storm. At midnight. And because b) the script was so incredibly, unutterably awful. I gave up on it about 45 minutes in.
So. Yesterday, Australia popped to the top position in my Netflix queue and landed in my mailbox. Last night I was too busy watching 10-year-old opera singers make it to the next level in America's Got Talent, so I didn't get to it until tonight. I'm not sure how it got onto my queue, but hey, Hugh Jackman. Actually, now that I consider, I do know how it got onto my queue [g]. Anyway. I dropped it into the DVD player.
I'm sorry. I simply could not get past the Aboriginal child narrator of the first 10 minutes or so. It was like he was narrating some sort of geography lesson for simpletons. I'm sure whoever made that decision meant well, but criminy. The rest of the movie could have been Oscar bait, but I'm certainly not going to find out now.
So. Anyone have a good historical movie about Australia for me to watch? That's available on Netflix?
Thanks!
