mmegaera: (quilting)
My oldest niece is pregnant with her third child, and they just found out it's a girl. She's due in November.

So, I'm making another baby quilt. I think this is my ninth or tenth. Maybe my twelfth. This will be my seventh time as a great-aunt (my three older sisters had six children among them between my fifteenth and nineteenth birthdays and now roughly 30 years later that generation has started procreating with a vengeance). I also made several for nieces and nephews on my ex's side before we got divorced, and I've made a couple for friends along the way, too. Maybe my fifteenth? I don't know. I've lost track. Let's just say that for someone who's never had kids herself, I've made a lot of baby quilts [g].

Anyway. I've gotten in the habit of collecting baby fabric over the last few years. When I see some I like, I buy a yard and set it aside. So a focus fabric for the quilt is not a problem. I just wish I could find a good pattern that I haven't done before that requires both a focus fabric* and is a scrap-style** quilt. It's not an easy combination. Usually it's an either/or proposition. I don't expect a lot of suggestions in this particular forum, but I thought I might throw my challenge out there for fun.

Anybody know any good quilt patterns that are both scrappy and need a focus fabric (that isn't just in the borders)?

*focus fabric -- A fabric used for the basis of all other color/fabric choices in a quilt. It's also usually used in a greater quantity than the other fabrics in its quilt, but not always.

**scrap-style -- A quilt with many, many fabrics in it. The 48" square quilt in my icon, for instance, has about thirty different purple fabrics and as many different green fabrics, as well as about a dozen black fabrics in it. The white is all the same fabric, however.

So. I think this is what I'm going to do. Simple and fairly straightforward, scrappy and using a focus fabric [g]. Although not that focus fabric. I don't have the one I plan to use scanned into the computer, so the one in the quilt is just a place-holder. The colors are close to what I'm going to do, though. The request was for green and yellow with a little red. The focus fabric has those colors (and a couple of others) in it.

I probably won't get to it till after WorldCon, though.
