Collectibles

* Hardcover? Or paperback?
* Illustrations? Or just text?
* First editions? Or you don’t care?
* Signed by the author? Or not?

Paperback unless the book in question is by an author I simply can't wait that long for. I have been known to sell the hardback and replace it with a more-easily-read lighter-weight paperback when it becomes available. Yes, I know that's the reverse of what most people do. I also have been known to buy a "spare" paperback copy when the first one starts to wear out from rereading against the possibility of it going out of print and not being available used.

I like illustrations, but most adult fiction doesn't come with them, so I do without. I like the little art that occasionally heads chapters. I do prefer cover art to actually depict something from the book and to do it accurately...

Again, first editions only matter if I absolutely have to have the book the moment it comes out (Lois Bujold, I'm looking at you [g]).

I have a few signed books and they're cool, mostly because I got to stand there and watch the author sign them. I don't much see the point of buying an already-autographed book. The main reason for autographs is as an excuse for meeting the author, IMHO.
