An hour and a half from Paradise [g]. Lots of pictures behind the cut
The new visitor center at Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park opened on Friday:

My friend L. and I decided that we needed, well, I needed and she was willing to come along, to find out if it met with our approval. It does. Shiny new exhibits, a lovely big-windowed, ecologically-friendly building that fits into its surroundings much better than the old flying saucer:

Which you can barely see off in the distance behind the lovely foliage. They'll be tearing it down soon -- it was the height of fashion in the 1960s when it was built, but now costs a fortune to heat and leaks everywhere.
The day was gorgeous:

Although it clouded over as the afternoon progressed:

(there are two marmots in this picture, if you look closely)
We had a very good critter day, too:

The jay upset the fellow eating lunch next to us by making off with fully half his sandwich. That'll larn him not to keep a better hold on it [g].
We also saw gray jays and ground squirrels and chipmunks. Oh, and a fox, but he was moving too fast to have his picture taken.
More lovely fall foliage:

This sentiment was part of the new visitor center area:

And I have to say I agree.
It's always a wonderful day in Paradise.
